P.L.A.N.E.T. was founded in 1997 by industrial designer Marc Craane. The current collection consists of newly designed products, restyled products and rediscovered products. In fact, the entire collection started with the seventies ashtray Marc re-styled after having come across the item on one of his many trips to Asia. In 1999, he changed the company's name to the current acronym. The new name distinguishes P.L.A.N.E.T. from other similarly named enterprises and more accurately reflects the company's attitude towards design philosophy.

In addition to rediscovering and restyling products, P.L.A.N.E.T. also works with young designers. Innovative products have been the result of past collaborations. Dutch designer Rob Gijsbers, for example, created vases and a bowl that, although made of aluminium with plastic coating, resemble an uncanny fusion of metal and ceramics. Central to all P.L.A.N.E.T. designs is the fact that Marc Craane initiates the process by selecting the material and product category before approaching a carefully chosen designer with a proposal. It is a key factor in the development of P.L.A.N.E.T. products, unifying the designs.
